Key Objectives College of Engineering and Technology
The primary objective of the dean is to strengthen national capabilities in technology education by fostering excellence in teaching and research, driving innovation in engineering and technology, enhancing university-industry linkages for effective technology transfer, preserving Ethiopia’s heritage, and empowering graduates to collaboratively address engineering challenges.
Mission
The Wolkite University College of Engineering and Technology has the following missions:
Ø To generate new knowledge in engineering and related fields, and to prepare students from diverse backgrounds to become responsible leaders and engaged citizens committed to the betterment of society.
Ø To deliver relevant and in-demand technologies and knowledge that address developmental challenges at both national and community levels.
Ø To support the efficiency, effectiveness, and competitiveness of governmental and non-governmental organizations.
Ø To provide training and consultancy services to the community and government institutions.
Vision
To become one of the leading Institutes of Technology in applied sciences for research, training, and technology transfer in Ethiopia by 2035.
Duties, Responsibilities, and Terms of Office of a Dean
Ø The President shall appoint a Dean from a list of three nominees who are full-time teaching staff of the University, holding the rank of Lecturer or above, and selected in accordance with the University's academic regulations.
Ø The Dean shall be accountable to the Vice President for Academic Affairs (VPAA). However, depending on the nature of the issue, the Dean shall also report to the Vice President for Research and Technology Transfer Affairs (VPRTTA) on matters related to research, community engagement, technology transfer, and industry linkage. The Dean shall report operational matters regularly through written communication, and formally through quarterly and annual reports.
Ø The term of office for a Dean shall be three years, renewable once based on merit and a competitive selection process, as guided by the relevant university policy. The Dean is subject to periodic performance evaluations, which may lead to early termination of the term for justified reasons.
As the Chief Executive Officer of the College/School, the Dean shall be accountable to the VPAA and shall have the following responsibilities:
- Serve as Chairperson of the College Academic Council (CAC) and the College Student Affairs Committee (SAC).
- Implement all CAC decisions related to staff appointment and promotion, contract renewal, student admissions, graduation, and other academic matters in line with university policies.
- Promote multidisciplinary academic and research programs.
- Propose to the CAC/SAC the establishment, revision, amalgamation, or dissolution of academic programs.
- Monitor the implementation of CAC/SAC recommendations and present progress reports to the respective councils.
- Coordinate the preparation of college plans, programs, and budgets in collaboration with department heads, and submit them to the CAC/SAC for review and endorsement. Recommend budget allocation schemes and follow up on implementation.
- Direct and coordinate the activities of departments and other units within the College/School.
- Lead and coordinate all research initiatives of the College.
- Oversee continuing education, professional development programs, workshops, and seminars.
- Coordinate the development of admission criteria for students and participate in their placement.
- Ensure the efficient management and use of the College's physical resources.
- Issue internal rules and procedures in alignment with University policies and regulations.
- Ensure University policies and regulations are accessible and well-known by staff and students.
- Recruit qualified professionals on a full-time or part-time basis to support the College's teaching and research needs.
- Foster strong working relationships with relevant University units.
- Promote the College’s public image by providing transparent and accurate information about its activities.
- Plan and implement initiatives that promote academic excellence.
- Address the welfare needs of both staff and students.
- Ensure proper maintenance of student records in accordance with guidelines set by the Office of the Registrar.
- Initiate the joint appointment of academic staff from external institutions, including industry partners, as per legal provisions.
- Delegate duties and responsibilities as appropriate to vice deans or department heads.
- Submit an annual report on college activities to the CAC/SAC and VPAA.
- Perform any other duties as assigned by the VPAA or the CAC.
Establishiment of College of Enineering Technogy
The College of Engineering and Technology at Wolkite University was established in 2012 G.C., concurrently with the founding of the university. Initially, the College began with eight departments, namely:
