Primary Objective

To lead and enhance the academic mission of the School of Law by fostering a rigorous educational environment, promoting legal scholarship, and preparing students for successful careers in law and public service.

Development Goals:

  1. Enhance Legal Education and Scholarship: Promote continuous improvement in curriculum, teaching methodologies, and research.
  2. Strengthen Strategic Partnerships: Build and maintain strong relationships with legal communities, government institutions, and other stakeholders.
  3. Advance Leadership and Professional Development: Support faculty, staff, and students in developing leadership skills through targeted programs.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Academic Leadership: Oversee the design and implementation of law school programs, ensuring compliance with accreditation standards and alignment with institutional goals.
  2. Faculty Development: Recruit, mentor, and evaluate faculty members, fostering a culture of academic excellence and professional growth.
  3. Student Support and Success: Create a supportive learning environment that meets students' academic, professional, and career development needs.
  4. Strategic Growth and Engagement: Develop and implement initiatives to enhance the law school’s reputation, expand outreach, and drive community engagement, including fundraising efforts.
  5. Financial and Resource Management: Oversee budget allocation and resource utilization, ensuring transparency, efficiency, and accountability.

Historical Background

The School of Law at Wolkite University was established in the 2013 academic year. Its primary objectives align with the mandates of Ethiopian higher education institutions, focusing on teaching, research, and community service. ​

Teaching: The school aims to educate and train future legal experts. As of the latest available data, 236 students are enrolled in the undergraduate regular program.

Research: In the realm of research, the School is engaged in studies addressing legal and socio-legal issues, contributing to the development of the legal field in Ethiopia. ​

Community Service: Demonstrating a strong commitment to community service, the School established a free legal aid center in 2014. Initially launched as a pilot project, the center operates two offices in Wolkite town and the local prison administration, providing legal assistance to indigent and vulnerable groups. Plans are underway to expand services to Butajira town, Yem Special Woreda, and Emdibir towns. ​

Vision: The School aspires to be among the leading institutions and a center of excellence in the field of law by the year 2020. ​

Mission: Its mission encompasses offering high-quality education and training, conducting demand-driven and problem-solving research and consultancy, and providing community service in the area of law. ​

Values: The School upholds values such as overall quality, sustainable institutional development, democracy and diversity, competitiveness and creativity, effective and efficient utilization of resources, collective work, customer focus, and adherence to the rule of law. ​

Organizational Structure:

ü  School Council: The highest management body, responsible for overseeing the School's operations. ​

ü  School Dean: Leads and coordinates the overall activities of the School. ​

ü   Vice Dean: Assists in managing the School's functions. ​

ü  Administrative Assistant: Supports administrative activities, including budgeting and property management. ​

ü  Quality Assurance Coordinator: Ensures the quality of teaching and learning within the School. ​

ü  Research, Community Service, and Industry Linkage Coordinator: Oversees research initiatives, community service projects, and industry linkages. ​

 Through these structured efforts, the School of Law at Wolkite University continues to contribute significantly to legal education, research, and community service in Ethiopia.
