  Background

The Government of Ethiopia is now expanding the number of the Universities in the country. Together with the expansion of higher education in the country, Psychology Departments have been opened in various universities. These dozens of universities are producing graduates of general psychology who could serve in various areas of the world of work.  The importance of psychology in modern times is unquestionable. Psychology has earned recognition through its service in enhancing and preserving human happiness. Most importantly, it can become almost indispensable owing to such factors as rapid industrialization, urbanization, the change in the lifestyles of peoples, the influence of western culture, economic upheavals, the social, health, economic, and psychological effect of HIV/AIDS etc. Because of this and other related factors, life is becoming more complex and harder and beyond control for many people. Thus, in order to undertake psychological support to the needy, the development of the field of psychology has an enormous importance. Psychology program is aiming at producing well equipped and competent professionals that would serve the society in different domains and at various levels of governmental and non-governmental organizations.

To this end, psychology program was inaugurated under the  College of Social Science and Humanities  in 2008 E.c. Accordingly, our programme is now  young and in its  first phase.  Currently, we start the long journey by having approximately 72 students enrolling in regular program. In doing this , the department is striving to provide our first batch students with  a sound foundation  in theory, research and practical experiences relevant to applying psychology to studying and solving  all levels of diverse social problems in our country. Moreover, the department has been offering various  supporting courses to students of various colleges in Wolkite University thereby contributing its utmost effort in producing graduates  who can apply  their expertise to transform their own and community lives.

  • In line with the vision of Wolkite University and is aspiration to be center of institutional excellence, the department of psychology envision to create  collaborative environment for innovation and scientific discovery in psychological science and for attainment psychological literacy that are responsive and relevant to our societal needs .

  • To support our students in the exploration, discovery and dissemination of knowledge in psychology relevant to solve our community problems at various levels
  • To create  a conducive and collaborative environment  for our students that will foster intellectual curiosity by integrating teaching- learning and research activities  very closely.
  • To provide our graduates with adequate psychological literacy thereby enable them prepare themselves for advanced study in psychology and employment.
  • To serve all the people and communities around Wolkite University by sharing our psychological expertise .

  Goals

  • Provide high quality of teaching - learning process that align with future country level directives and strategies.
  • Deliver and respond  to timely and relevant needs  of the community.
  • Strength and build the capacity of our department staffs  to ensure high quality teaching learning , problem solving researches and community services engagement.
  • creating and developing sister relations with other universities psychology departments and linkages with other external stakeholders to facilitate  learning of best  experiences and positive models.

As far as research and community service engagement is concerned, currently ,based on research and teaching interest reflecting sub-specialties of the discipline , the department of psychology is divided in to five sub research areas. In doing this, we try to blend our research areas and focuses with other disciplines in the liberal arts to give us the many opportunities, broad range of skills , knowledge and experiences that will be generated by involvement in interdisciplinary  researches and  community services. The list of the five sub research teams in our program is the following.

  • Psychosocial health and clinical research sub-team
  • Counseling psychology and special needs
  • Social and cultural  dynamics, work and motivation ,group behaviour
  •  Educational psychology, planning, assessment, management sub-team
  • Psychological testing ,assessment, measurement & evaluation sub-team

  • Health beliefs, Cultural barriers in maternal health
  • Quality of education -supervising and measuring
  • Students assessment and Evaluation
  • Marriage ,divorce, gender  development, sexual relationships

  • Special populations- people with HIV/AIDS, orphans, street children, people in correctional institutions
