 Historical Background

The College of Education and Behavioral Science (CEBS) is committed to serving the community and contributing meaningfully to the advancement of quality education. Since its establishment in 2018, the College has strengthened the University’s academic structure and reinforced its dedication to expanding diverse and relevant fields of study that support national development.

The College currently employs a total of 35 staff members, comprising 27 active academic staff and 8 PhD candidates and serves 250 regular students, along with 167 students enrolled in the Summer Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching (PGDT) program. CEBS consists of three academic departments: Psychology; Educational Planning and Management; and Curriculum and Instructional Supervision and one Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching (PGDT) program.

Beyond its core mission of teaching and learning, the College actively engages in multidisciplinary research initiatives designed to enhance educational and psychological practices while addressing the needs of the wider community. Through its strong commitment to academic excellence, innovative research, and community engagement, the CEBS continues to play a vital role in fulfilling the mission of Applied Science University and supporting the development of the education sector in Ethiopia.

CEBS plays a pivotal role in advancing the university’s mission by integrating strategic planning, academic excellence, research, and community engagement. The Dean ensures effective governance, resource management, and quality assurance while fostering collaboration across departments (Psychology, Educational Planning & Management, Curriculum Instruction and Supervision). Through strong leadership, the college contributes to national educational development and prepares graduates equipped to meet societal needs.

Goals and Objectives

1. Academic Excellence

  • Deliver high-quality educational programs that equip students with the knowledge, skills, and values required to become competent professionals in education and behavioral sciences.
  • Continuously update curricula to reflect evolving educational trends and societal needs.

2. Research Promotion

  • Foster a vibrant culture of research and innovation among faculty and students.
  • Encourage studies that address pressing issues such as educational quality, mental health, and psychosocial challenges within the community and beyond.
  • Support interdisciplinary and applied research that contributes to national development.

3. Community Engagement

  • Strengthen partnerships with local schools, educational organizations, hospitals, and community groups.
  • Promote the practical application of knowledge and skills in real-world settings.
  • Provide outreach programs that enhance community well-being and educational standards.

4. Faculty Development

  • Support continuous professional growth of faculty members through advanced studies, workshops, and collaborative projects.

Major Duties and Responsibilities  

1. Strategic Leadership

  • Develop and implement strategic plans aligned with the university’s vision and mission.
  • Promote multidisciplinary academic and research programs.
  • Propose new programs, revise existing ones, or recommend dissolution/amalgamation when necessary.

2. Academic Oversight

  • Supervise curriculum design, evaluation, and revision to ensure relevance.
  • Coordinate teaching, research, and community service activities.
  • Direct and coordinate academic programs.
  • Ensure quality assurance mechanisms are in place for teaching and research.

3. Governance & Policy Implementation

  • Carry out decisions of the College Academic Council (CAC) regarding appointments, promotions, admissions, and graduations.
  • Issue rules and procedures for proper administration in line with university policies.

4. Resource & Budget Management

  • Coordinate preparation of college plans, programs, and budgets.
  • Administer and oversee proper utilization of financial and physical resources.

5. Research, Community engagement & Professional Development

  • Direct and coordinate all research and community engagement activities of the college.
  • Initiate joint appointments with external institutions and industry.
  • Coordinate professional development courses, seminars, and workshops.

6. Student Affairs

  • Ensure proper maintenance of student records in line with registrar guidelines.

7. Staff Affairs

  • Recruit qualified professionals for teaching and research.
  • Delegate duties appropriately to vice deans or department heads.

8. External Relations  

  • Represent the college in professional associations, and public events.
  • Foster good working relationships with relevant university units and external stakeholders.
