Department of Midwifery, Wolkite University

After a year of the establishment of the University, the department was opened by enrolling 60 students in 2013/2014 G.C & quadrupled the number of Students in 2016/2017 that reached 250.

The department is striving to prepare students who are well equipped by maternal & child health care knowledge & skill important to alleviate problems associated with under developments & environmental changes in order to achieve GTP 2 & strengthen the welcoming & improve limitations in the post millennium era. The graduates are expected to be more empathetic & motivated to deal with the issues of mothers & children who are socially & economically disadvantaged.

Vision

In line with the vision of the Wolkite University, the college of Health Sciences & Medicine envisions to become the leading center of excellence in Africa for community based health promotion and operational researches to produce competent midwifes responsive to societal needs.

Mission

Our mission is to provide quality health education that qualifies our graduates to serve the community. We strive to produce competent, entrepreneurial, ethical and compassionate health professionals, who can make a difference in the health sector by providing professional services for individuals, family and community in all the areas of rural and urban societies in Ethiopia. Moreover, the midwifery department has huge responsibility of coordinating & performing problem solving research activities, provide community services on health & health related issues affecting majority of the people on integrated & organized manners.

Rationale

Contrary to the high demand for health care, the proportion of highly qualified maternal health professionals is very low compared to the size of the population served and facilities on continually built thus; this situation Compel training of appropriate types and adequate number of professionals.

 

Future directions

 with the assumption of fulfilling the required resources that meet at least the minimum standard, the department of midwifery has plans to open:

1. Midwifery upgrading degree program in 2010 E.C

 2. Postgraduate programs with master’s degree in maternity nursing and educational midwifery in 2013 E.C

3. Postgraduate program with master’s degree in clinical midwifery

 4. Postgraduate programs with PhD in 2020 E.C and

 5. Establishment of MCH training & research centre in 2011E.C

6. Creating partnership with governmental and nongovernmental of foreign and local institutions
